One of the most useful features an official club could offer would be access to an on-line archive of building plans.

Actually I've been looking at other "Official Fan Clubs" and 99% of them are run/recognised by the thing or person it's related to. LEGO has a great fan section and they also link to a lot of other fan sites and blogs.
I have also read through some of the Playmobil forums and fan sites and have come to the conclusion that as Horst Brandstetter/Geobra/Playmobil don't want to invest in the effort to create a Fan Club of some sort on their Official Web Site the best thing they could do is bestowe their blessing (the title "Official") to one of the Playmobil Forums/fan sites and help that site either financially or product-wise and have a working relationship with that group. In the long run I don't see a fan-based Club surviving for very long - too many problems from all sides and what happens over the long haul with the leadership . I am also concerned that with an "Official Fan Club" of some kind it will be so easy for Geobra to force the rest of us out of commission and it wouldn't surprise me at all. But having said that I am still interested in the attempt and wish anyone working on it Good Luck. |

Helen, don't worry, I don't think there is any desire of Playmobil to reduce fan sites to one as this would only harm it's reputation badly and be very hard to enforce, even impossible to enforce.

On your other point, Helen, it would cost Playmobil a lot of money to start up a club themselves and currently in the present economic recession money must be short. Better then to have fans start and run the club with the support of Playmobil is probably management thinking. There will have to be some costs for Playmobil, however, for example, advertising the club and staff costs as a member of staff will liaise with the club

Closing a site may be difficult, but forcing the Playmobil stuff off or to stop it being discussed isn't that difficult as fan sites often don't have the money or legal power to fight someone like Geobra. because we are fans and some of us have little extra money.
As far as advertising the Collectors' Club, they barely have to add anything to their expenses - a few added words to their catalogues - that's just a little editing and on their web site a link which their IT people could easily add in a few keystrokes. Word of mouth does a lot. If they are supporting a fan site then they may have a few added expenses, which if properly done by both parties would very soon pay for itself and then add to their bottom line. |
