As the assistent and her brother have bothered me for a while to set up some trains along with possibly the zoo and circus I went into the basement and have found all the older circus sets that were down there and I really like this truck so I thought some of you may like to see it too. It was available in Germany from 1986 t0 1991 and here in the US from 1988 to 1989. This set had no assembly instructions.
The first photo is the set with it's stickers which haven't been put on because the one child wants them on and the other wants to use it and the camels to help in his construction business. There is the tow piece that can switched with the winch - not sure if this was a mistake or not. Also the camels came with 2 types of saddles. The second is a front view showing that a phone in a vehicle was important. Luckily this is also a dump truck because camels can be difficult. The next photo shows the empty truck and then the reloaded camels with the sides being secured. The last photo is a scan of the back of the box. Even though the slickness of the new packaging shows clearly what comes in the box; the old boxes are actually better really from a marketing aspect because the scenes show more than just the item in the box. |

Thank you, Helen, for this very good review of the camel truck.
The interchangeable winch and towing block at the front seem to have been a standard option with this type of truck which was based on the Mercedes Benz Unimog of the day. I have two of the construction version and both have the optional parts. I bought them second hand, one from a Playmobil collector friend and the other off eBay and both came with this part. It's purpose was to provide a means of pulling another vehicle out of, say, mud using a tow rope or, conversely, the Unimog being pulled out of mud with a tow rope. The rear of the truck is interesting because all the dropsides are taller than those on the other versions, presumably to stop the camels either jumping out or falling out.

Thanks for the review and the useful explanation.
I have never paid much attention to this set since I don't collect the circus theme, but I also noticed the high boards on the tipper box. Indeed a nice set and a useful review! SB

An interseting review. It is fun to see older sets, it shows how things have evolved.

Thanks for the photos. I especially liked the camel being dumped out of the back.
